GIS in the Rockies 2023 Scholarship Program

GIS in the Rockies (GISITR) is a non-profit organization most well-known for the annual GIS in the Rockies Conference, the Rocky Mountain West’s premier geospatial information and technology conference. GISITR is pleased to continue its student scholarship program to encourage and support geospatial research and education through the region.  GISITR offers scholarships annually to deserving undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in educational institutions within the Rocky Mountain West (i.e. Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico).

GISITR will award one $1000 scholarship in 2023 to a graduate or undergraduate student studying in the field of geospatial sciences:

ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS FOR 2023

  • The applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled and in good standing at an accredited two or four-year educational institution within the Rocky Mountain West. In addition, remote students enrolled in online programs at University’s in the Rocky Mountain West are also eligible.
  • The applicant must have completed at least one session (i.e. semester or quarter) at their current institution before the application submission deadline of September 12, 2023.
  • The applicant’s coursework or research must be in the geospatial science discipline (i.e. GIS, remote sensing, GPS).

The Student Scholarship Application Required Materials

The components of the student scholarship application are as follows:

  • Applicant’s name and contact information (i.e. email, mailing address, and phone number).
  • The Name and address of the Institution where the applicant is currently attending.
  • The applicant’s declared college major.
  • Applicant’s status (undergraduate or graduate)
  • Expected college graduation date.
  • List of completed and pertinent college courses.
  • List of future pertinent college courses.
  • A list of academic honors, awards, community service, and volunteer work.
  • A narrative illustrating how the scholarship monies will be used to facilitate the applicant’s education and or research.
  • A letter of recommendation from a professor or instructor that includes:
    1. Name of student applicant.
    2. Name of professor or instructor.
    3. Letter should be put on college letter head.
    4. Contact information of professor or instructor.
  • If the applicant is a graduate student in a program that requires a capstone project, thesis, or dissertation; then, submission of an abstract is required. Undergraduates conducting senior projects are also required to submit a written abstract.

The Abstract

  • No more than a 250-word abstract describing the applicant’s project or research. Abstracts submitted as part of the scholarship application may have co-authors; however, the primary author must be the applicant.
  • All the scholarship material must be assembled into a single pdf document that is less than 10 mb in size and email to: scholarships@gisintherockies.org.
  • Scholarship recipients will receive complimentary full registration to the 2023 GISITR Conference.
  • Scholarships will be awarded based solely on academic merit following the scoring criteria listed below. Members of the GISITR Board of Directors and Planning Committee are not eligible to receive a scholarship award.

 

DEADLINES AND EVALUATION

  • The deadline for submitting a completed application is 11:59PM MDT, September 12, 2023.
  • Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
  • The GISITR Board of Directors will evaluate all applications and select recipients based only on the information provided in the application. All decisions made by the GISITR Board of Directors are final.
  • Scholarship recipients will be announced on the GISITR website and social media.
  • Scholarship recipients will be announced and the awards presented at the GISITR Conference held September 20-21 2023.

 

SCORING CRITERIA

The GISITR Board of Directors will use the following weighting and scoring criteria to evaluate complete applications and determine scholarship award recipients.

  • Letter of Recommendation = 15% Written Abstract = 15%
  • Suitable topic related to geospatial science 5%
  • Adequate use of GIS tools and techniques 5%
  • Originality of geospatial project/research 10%
  • Quality of writing (completeness, clarity, grammar, organization) = 10%
  • Coursework (completed and future) pertaining to geospatial science = 10%
  • Academic honors, awards, community service, and volunteer work (20%)
  • Explanation of how this scholarship will further research and education (10%)

Note: All scholarship applicants are welcome to submit an abstract to the GISITR Conference even if not selected for a scholarship award. Student registration is only $75 for all three days.
